Prospective Marriage Visa
If you are engaged to an Australian Citizen, or an Australian Permanent Resident, or an eligible New Zealander citizen, you can come to Australia and marry your loved one under a Prospective Marriage Visa. The prospective marriage visa used to be known as the Fiancé(e) Visa.
This visa is only valid for 9 months, and if you are granted, you must marry your fiancé(e) within the given period before proceeding to apply for a Partner Visa in order to remain in Australia with your spouse.
This visa extends to both opposite and same sex couples.
You must be outside of Australia when you make your application (offshore), and you must be outside of Australian when the visa is granted.

- must be sponsored by your fiancé(e) (who must be 18 years old or older)
- must meet health and character requirements
You must be able to show that you have physically met your fiancé(e) and know them personally. You must also be able to prove that you are engaged, will marry your fiancé(e) within the period and that you intend to live in a genuine relationship.
Once your permanent Prospective Marriage Visa has been granted, you will be allowed to work, study and travel freely in and out of Australia during the validity period.
