Parent Visa
Parents living abroad are able to reunite with their children in Australia under the Parent Visa.
The child sponsoring you must be an Australian citizen, or an Australian Permanent Resident, or an eligible New Zealand Citizen.
You must be outside of Australia when you make your application (offshore), and you must be outside of Australian when the visa is granted.
Basic Requirements
- must be sponsored by your children who are living in Australia
- your child must be an Australian citizen, or an Australian Permanent Resident, or an eligible New Zealand Citizen
- must meet health and character requirements
You must also pass the balance of family test, which demonstrates that half of your children are legally living in Australia.
Once your Parent Visa has been granted, you will become an Australian Permanent Resident, which means you can work, live and study in Australia permanently. You will also be able to access Government-Subsidised healthcare (Medicare), some social security benefits and apply for Australian Citizenship.
If you are granted a Contributory Parent Visa, you will be granted temporary residence in Australia and will only be able to Work, study and access Government-Subsidised healthcare (Medicare).
